## SIMBa (confinat): Elliptic PDE 2: Existence and uniqueness of solutions

El proper dimecres, 20 de maig, se celebrarà una nova xerrada —en format virtual— del Seminari Informal de Matemàtiques de Barcelona (SIMBa).

Speaker: Damià Torres.
Universitat: Universitat de Barcelona.

Data: Wednesday, 20th of May
Hora: 12:00, virtual coffee break (bring your coffee); 12:20, talk.
Lloc: Zoom meeting. Aquí.
Idioma: English

Títol: Elliptic PDE 2: Existence and uniqueness of solutions
Resum: There are two main approaches to the problem of existence anduniqueness of the solutions. Theenergy methods, related to thevariational formulation and theviscosity methods, based on a moregeometric approach. We will discuss both for the Laplace equa-tion, and then comment on how an extension to general ellipticoperators is possible. Additionally, we will see how the same met-hods can be adapted to the obstacle problem

## SIMBa (confinat): Elliptic PDE 1: Why do we study them?

Data: Wednesday, 13th of May
Hora: 12:00, virtual coffee break (bring your coffee); 12:20, talk.
Lloc: Zoom. A link will be provided the day before.
Idioma: English

Títol: Elliptic PDE 1: Why do we study them?
Resum: Elliptic PDE theory plays a central role in modern mathematical analysis, and it is connected with probability and geometricmeasure theory. Historically, elliptic PDE come from physicalproblems related to the heat equation, first studied by Fourier in 1822, and also from the Poisson equation, that appears in electro-magnetism. In this first talk, we discuss both classical and modernapplications, and we introduce concepts to state the main problemin the field: existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions.
